Their sound has been described many ways. Here are some things that have been written about Croatan:

"...The Sun Will Burn You If You Try To Eat It , A track so chaotically random in it's approach that it's unclear whether it can actually be classified as music. One part genius, nine parts insanity." - James Sherry, Kerrang!

"Pure metal baby, grindy, mean and EVIL!" - Sarah Stierch, Flipside Magazine

"Violent Passion Surrogate is music for our selfish 90's , for playing in the dark at full tilt with the neighbors hammering on the walls whilst you're hiding in the corner, pissed and sniveling! A joy.....!!!" - Here Be Monsters Magazine, March 1999

"Croatan is a band that deeply understands the liberating power that a well cranked guitar riff can produce." - Chris Zelk, Chattanooga Free Press

"...bassless but monstrously powerful." - Beth Ramona Allen, San Francisco Bay Guardian

The word Croatan is in reference to the Lost Colony of Roanoke in North Carolina, which was settled by the British in the late 16th century. According to a legend, after returning from England with supplies the leaders found the colonists had all disappeared, leaving behind only the word CROATAN carved on a tree. The colonists had rejected their former way of life and chose rather to live among the Croatan tribe, a neighboring group of Native Americans. In doing so, they became the first dropouts of North American society. They had Gone To Croatan.
